Week 16 Web awards

I thought vufind was very good and will have more of a look at that. I had a look at a few of the others but really couldn't see what was so good about them. Maybe it's because none of the subject areas were really my cup of tea, but I'll look at some more and see what is out there.

Week 15 Flowcharts

I signed up to MindMeister and found it quite easy to get started. I need to write up some procedures for my job, so I just started brainstorming, and it was so useful. I'm going to do more work on this for sure. I'm waiting for the Flowchart access details to be emailed to me to have a go at that.

I got may access to Flowchart, but am having trouble figuring it out. Might take a while.

Week 14 Newsletters

I had fun with this one, but went ahead and created one, then tried to save it and email it, and realised that I should have joined up - which I have now done. I can see that this will be really useful for libraries. Lets see if the link works

Week 13 eBooks

I have just had a look at the World EBook Fair' site and it is very interesting. I tried searching for a couple of authors in the Project Gutenberg section, but didn't find anything, although I guess they are copyrighted. I was at a loss to think of what to search for, and decided to look at the Top 100, where I found The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci — Complete by Leonardo da Vinci.

The information about the Format and Encoding was really useful, but as this is only available as a text file, it was only text, and I think if I'm thinking of the right notebooks, there are a lot of drawings which are quite important. Also this one in particular is not copyrighted in the US, but could be in other parts of the world..... 'If you live elsewhere check the laws of your country before downloading this ebook.' I'm not sure what the situation is here.

Overall, this is a really amazing resource, but I'm not sure how we would use it in our library.

Week 3 Library Thing

Way back in week 3 I wasn't able to use Library Thing at work. It turns out that the search function doesn't work here for some reason, but I got help to find an alternative way to find books. So I have picked my 5 books and hope to be able to add them to my blog. Here goes!

Week 12 YouTube

It's easy to search for stuff and look at it, but when I tried to insert one into my blog I got into a bit of trouble. I wasn't sure what bit I should be copying and pasting into the blog. I worked it out with a bit of help from karen. Then I had to move it around my blog to make it fit. I couldn't figure out how to reduce it in size if that was possible. With some of these things it takes a bit of time to fiddle around and figure out how to do things, but you do work it out in the end.

Week 11

Help! I can't use Podcasts. Are they blocked at Justice?

Week 10

Rollyo is very easy to use. I was having trouble thinking of what I wanted to search, so decided to do a Viggo sites one of fan websites for Viggo. It works really well. I also tried a library catalogue one, with the web pages of the catalogues of the various public libraries I go to, but that didn't work, of course, because you have to choose fields and type in your search queries etc., whereas Rollyo is searching the web content.

week 9

I used to use Wikipedia quite a bit in my previous job, and still go to it on occasion now. I find it very useful, but of course if I had to have really reliable information about a topic I wouldn't rely on it. I hadn't really seen other wikis before looking at a few of the ones suggested, but I can see how they are very useful, for example a conference, or even in the workplace for procedures where everyone can add and update information. The wikinorthia one is fascinating (the bit about life in the 30s). And I enjoyed the booklovers one.

Week 8

I have signed up to delicious. It is useful, I can see that it will be useful for when I use other computers. This is even useful at work, because we use more than one PC. I do need to spend a bit of time getting used to it though. I'm finding it a bit slow finding my way around it and how it works. I'll have to go back to it when I have a bit more time. I did manage to add some bookmarks though.

Week 7

I have created my iGoogle page and am very impressed. It is nice to have everything in one place. There was only one problem. I couldn't figure out how to add a library gadget. Does this mean for example for my local public library? Does the library have to have something set up to enable users to do this? It was a bit confusing.

I couldn't figure out how to change the weather to celsius either!

I added a To Do list and Google Reader that I had set up, as well as news and a calendar.

Week 6

Google docs looks very useful, I can see myself using it in the future. I'm already familiar with Google maps, I guess it is one of their tools that gets a lot of publicity. Google book search is a bit more of a mystery though. I'm going to have to look into it further - you know, read up on exactly what it is. It says that it searches the full text, but does it really? Of every book that it has?

Week 5

Well, Facebook and Myspace look very interesting, but I don't know if I'll set up my own one at the moment. I don't really have very much to display about myself. It is very useful though, if you want to get out there and put information up about yourself (or your library, or bookshop, or anything really). When I open up my bookshop cafe I'll be using it as a communication tool.

Week 4

I'm a bit behind as usual, but I've managed to add a few RSS feeds to my reader. I'll have to remember to go in and look at them! It was quite easy to do, luckily! I thought it would be useful to keep up to date with what's happening at ALIA and the SLV. Now....... on to week 5!

Week.... I've forgotten

Oh, gosh, how much fun I'm having, but I've only got half an hour to go on the public library internet before I get kicked off by the next person in line. I could spend hours! I really like the books sorted by colour. It looks really good, I guess it's not that practical though!
